S 2.441 Checking software for compatibility with Windows Vista and Windows 7
Initiation responsibility: Head of IT
Implementation responsibility: Administrator, Head of IT, IT Security Officer
Windows Vista and Windows 7 differ from previous Windows versions due to new security mechanisms and operating system properties. Its requirements are not met by every piece of software. As a result, software that operated properly on previous versions of Windows Vista and Windows 7 may not operate properly on Windows Vista or Windows 7 without additional support.
Compatibility check
Before purchasing any software for Windows Vista and Windows 7, the software must be checked for compatibility with the Windows Vista or Windows 7 version used and its current configuration. The same also applies if you intend to migrate software already in use to Windows Vista Windows 7. In case of an intended hardware change or an operating system migration, the driver software for all relevant components must also be checked for compatibility.
The compatibility check can be performed or support provided for it by performing the following activities:
- Researching the "Certified for Windows Vista" or "Certified for Windows 7" and "Works with Windows Vista/7" as well as "Works with Windows 7" web pages of the manufacturer (https://winqual.microsoft.com)
- Legally binding assurance of compatibility from the manufacturer of the software
- Checking compatibility in a test environment
- Requesting information from Microsoft regarding software known to be compatible or having compatibility problems
- Exchanging information with other users
- Researching software known to be compatible or having compatibility problems
- Examining software with supporting diagnostic programs such as regmon, filemon or, under Windows 7, procmon
The compatibility check should be integrated into the test and approval process.
For handling problems regarding the software compatibility under Windows 7, S 4.424 Secure use of older software under Windows 7 must be taken into account additionally.
Review questions:
- Was existing software or software to be purchased for Windows Vista or Windows 7 checked for compatibility with the Windows Vista or Windows 7 version used? (Logo "Certified for Windows Vista", "Certified for Windows 7")?
- Is the driver software for all relevant components checked for compatibility with Windows Vista or Windows 7 before an intended hardware change or operating system migration?
- Is the compatibility check integrated into the test and approval process for software?
