S 3.9 Ergonomic workplace
Initiation responsibility: Personnel/Supervisory Board, Building Services Manager
Implementation responsibility: Supervisor, Personnel/Supervisory Board, User
The stress and strain caused by working at a poorly equipped workplace should not be underestimated, because this can cause health problems over the long term. An ergonomic workplace can reduce this stress and strain, though. Improved ergonomics further result in a more efficient way of working. This is not only an advantage to the health of the employee, but also enables the employee to work more efficiently and improves the implementation of security safeguards.
For this reason, every workplace should be designed ergonomically. In the case of computer workplaces, this means it must be possible to adjust the chair, desk, screen, and keyboard individually to enable and promote error-free operation of the IT. Amongst other things, the height, the back, and the seat of the chair must be adjustable, but it must also be possible to arrange the working materials so that the least amount of strain is created when performing the corresponding work tasks.
A correspondingly equipped workplace also makes it easier to maintain security safeguards. If there is a lockable desk or cabinet available, data media, documents, papers, and accessories can be locked in the desk or cabinet.
The IT systems used at the workplace, and especially the monitor, must be positioned and set up ergonomically as well. For example, the monitor should always be at a right angle to any windows in order to avoid direct sunlight from reflecting off the screen. Furthermore, it should be possible to work with IT systems in an undisturbed manner. For example, other persons should be prevented from constantly looking over the shoulders of users. This is also helpful in preventing information from being read without authorisation.
Additional information can be found in the recommendations provided by trade unions or experts in occupational health and safety.
Review questions:
- Are the workplaces of all employees designed ergonomically?
- Can the equipment of the computer workplaces be adjusted individually so that the IT can be operated in as error-free a manner as possible?
- Are the IT systems and above all the screen positioned ergonomically and allowing the user to work undisturbed?
